GMail 2.0 for your mobile…

Monday, November 3rd, 2008

Gmail for mobile version 2.0 is for J2ME-supported and BlackBerry phones (not windows based!)

They have made it faster, more reliable, and reduced bottle-necks in the coding.

 Here are some key features:

  • Overall performance improvement: You should experience significant raw speed improvement, smoother scrolling, and no freezing.
  • Multiple accounts management: If you have both a Gmail and Google Apps email account, you can easily switch between them quickly. You will no longer have to use two different mobile apps to access personal and work emails.
  • Multiple mobile email drafts: You can save multiple email drafts in your mobile phone, so that you can pick and choose what you would like to send later.
  • Powerful shortcut keys: If you have a QWERTY phone, you can use shortcut keys. Hit ‘z’ to undo, ‘k’ to go to a newer conversation, and ‘j’ to go to an older conversation. See Menu/Help in the app for more shortcuts.
  • Basic offline support: Can’t get a signal? Not a problem. You can compose and read your most recent emails even when there is no signal. Also, any outgoing messages will be saved in the outbox on your phone and sent automatically when you’re back in coverage.

Gmail Logo, will it ever leave BETA?

Gmail Logo, will it ever leave BETA?

Google experienced another outage to their Gmail service. According to TheRegister, at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Google informed users via the Google Apps discussions forum of an issue stopping users logging into their accounts. The google rep said that it expected a solution to the problem by 9 p.m. next day.

While Google gave no reason as to why Gmail and Google Apps users were having the issues, users reported that they were seeing a 502 error when trying to access their accounts. Something that Gmail users are all too familiar with from August’s problems.

See below for the Google Blog comment on the outage:

“We’ve identified the source of this issue and fixed it. In addition, as with all issues that affect Gmail and our other services, we’re conducting a full review of what went wrong and moving quickly to update our internal systems and procedures accordingly. We don’t usually post about problems like this on our blog, but we wanted to make an exception in this case since so many people were impacted.”
